By 1890 only 141,000 Colt Single Action “Peacemakers” had been produced. Of that number 35,000 went to the U.S. Military. About 35,000 went to foreign markets. The 1890 U.S. Census put 17 million people west of the Mississippi and 3 times that east with no more than about 30,000 cowboys. With only about 70,000 Colt “Peacemakers” available, to think that all cowboys carried a Colt peacemaker, a la Hollywood, just isn’t realistic. Besides, it was the most expensive handgun on the market and cowboys the lowest paid.
